WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla.(WTXL) — The City of Sopchoppy has canceled its annual 4th of July celebration due to safety concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Councilman Becton James Roddenberry, Sopchoppy City Council voted 4-0 to cancel this year's Sopchoppy 4th of July celebration.

After an hour of discussion, and on advice of the City Attorney and City Administration, the Council made the decision to ensure the safety and welfare of residents and surrounding community members.

Roddenberry wrote, having the 4th of July Celebration would simply go against CDC Guidelines, the Florida Department of Health Guidelines, and Gov. Desantis' phase two reopening guidelines.

Roddenberry also added "I know we all want to get back to normalcy, but at the end of the day our safety, health, and security remains the top priority."
